Appreciation of My Caregiver: A Late Post
In Honor of Family Caregiver Appreciation Month: A Celebration of Compassion and Commitment
Caregiving, at its core, is love in action. It’s the unseen hours, the quiet sacrifices, the endless concern, and the fierce loyalty to care for someone — often while setting aside your own needs. For many caregivers, especially family caregivers, the experience can feel both rewarding and relentless. It’s not just the physical demands — it’s the emotional toll, the mental fatigue, and the quiet ache of being stretched thin.
And yet, caregivers continue. They love. They show up. They endure.
In recognition of Family Caregiver Appreciation Month, PDC Family Consultant, LLC proudly hosted its 1st Annual Caregiver’s Block Party — a celebration on “The Lot” — dedicated to honoring those who give so much of themselves, often without recognition.
Before the celebration, I had the privilege of interviewing several individuals who currently receive care. Their words were raw, real, and deeply moving. The gratitude they expressed wasn’t just for physical support — it was for the laughter, the sense of normalcy, the emotional safety, the sacrifices made in silence, and the choice their caregivers made to stay.
“They didn’t have to do it,” one person shared. “But they did — and they keep doing it. That kind of love changes you.”
Reflections of Gratitude
Among those interviewed:
Samera, my own child, shared tender reflections about the care she’s received.
Mrs. Delores, in her soft-spoken way, spoke volumes about the comfort of being seen and heard.
Eric expressed appreciation for the joy brought into his life through everyday moments of connection.
Tavon reminded us that caregiving isn't just about medical or daily tasks — it’s about love, dignity, and respect.
Each voice echoed the same truth: Caregivers matter. And they are deeply appreciated.
A Message to Family Caregivers
To every family caregiver — whether you're caring for a child, a parent, a sibling, a partner, or a friend — I salute you.
You are loved.
You are seen.
You are needed.
But more importantly, you are encouraged — to do more for yourself.
Take that breath.
Sit in the car a little longer before going inside.
Book that trip you’ve been putting off.
Call your friends.
Join a circle of spiritual or emotional connection.
Laugh. Cry.
Vent without guilt.
Let go of the shame around self-care.
Refill your cup, not just for others — but for you.
These were the hopes expressed by those receiving care. They know how heavy this journey can be, and yet their gratitude shines through the exhaustion.
As a parent who is also a caregiver, my heart was full hearing how much WE are appreciated. Because caregiving — especially as a family member — affects every aspect of life. It is:
Gratifying and grueling
Long-term and loving
Tiresome and time-shared
Natural and nurturing
Painful and preventative
Family caregiving is never just about care — it is always something more. It is deeply layered, deeply human, and undeniably powerful.
So today, and every day, we celebrate you — the caregivers.
May you be replenished in the same spirit in which you pour out to others.
You are the heartbeat of your families and communities.
You are not alone.
And you are enough.
